Have you heard of National Good Neighbor Day?
This holiday was created in the early 1970s and proclaimed an official holiday by President Jimmy Carter in 1978. Since 2003, Good Neighbor Day has been celebrated each year on Sept. 28. Their slogan is “Good neighbors make great neighborhoods.” Awesome, right?!
Included in the downloadable PDF below are some fun ways you can celebrate this day in your own neighborhood. Use these ideas for the day itself or weekend closest to it. Celebrating may be as simple as dropping off a baked treat or coordinating a more elaborate neighborhood-wide gathering.
At Smith Mountain Lake, we also have an outstanding organization called SML Good Neighbors. This non-profit is dedicated to developing good neighbors skills and values in children through programs that nourish, educate and support them. They also provide life-changing experiences for college students through leadership development internships.
You can find out more about how you can financially support their programming or volunteer at smlgoodneighbors.org.
