You’ve been looking forward to a Smith Mountain Lake vacation all winter long, but now that it’s upon you, you’re not sure what to do while you’re here. Your family may say they’re content to boat and swim all day, but you know adventures away from the vacation rental will add to the excitement. And if it rains, you definitely want to have a plan B activities list. Besides, there’s so much to do and see at Smith Mountain Lake it would be a shame not to spend at least one day exploring the community while you’re here.
Visitors on a Smith Mountain Lake vacation can get great guidance on summertime activities from both the Smith Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce and the Smith Mountain Lake Magazine’s Laker 365. Browse their helpful SML activities guides online or stop by local retailers and convenience stores to ask for one – they’re free!
As for Deb Beran Properties, we certainly have our favorite lake attractions and activities. If you’d like help narrowing the selection, here are a few destinations we recommend.
Bridgewater Plaza
One of the first true Smith Mountain Lake attractions to be established, Bridgewater Plaza is a mix of year-round entertainment. It offers clothing, gift and sporting goods stores, several eateries ranging in price and style, an arcade, an art gallery, an outdoor games area and one of the lakes busiest marinas.
Smith Mountain Lake Dam and Visitor’s Center
An evening boating cruise to the SML Dam is something we highly recommend, but an educational drive to visit and explore the dam from dry land is another great option. The visitor’s center is a fascinating way to learn the history of Smith Mountain Lake and the dam’s construction, engineering and ongoing maintenance, which is sure to please the scientific minds in your group.
Smith Mountain Lake winery tour
Did you know there are more than a dozen wineries in the greater Smith Mountain Lake area and at least five within the SML community? Virginia wines are becoming more popular all the time, and our community makes a sound contribution with local family owned and operated wineries that are a delight to visit! Check out the latest list of Smith Mountain Lake wineries here.
Downtown Moneta
If your Smith Mountain Lake vacation is on the Bedford side of the lake, you’ll want to head to Downtown Moneta’s Celebration Square for convenient shopping and dining. Several outlet stores and dining options all in one place.
Booker T. Washington National Monument
Famous educator and African American advocate Booker T. Washington grew up a slave on a plantation now turned into historic monument in the heart of the Smith Mountain Lake community. Start with documentary videos and lessons on his life at the visitor’s center and then explore the grounds for a 19th century experience the whole family will love and learn from.
We hope this helped you narrow down your Smith Mountain Lake vacation fun. Don’t forget to contact us at Deb Beran Properties for information on local real estate and home tours.
