Description

This 3650 sq ft 3 bdrm 2/2 bath custom home, completed in 2013, has panoramic mountain views and sits on 53+ acres just 15 minutes from town. It includes an attached 2.5 car garage, 2 space carport and open parking for other vehicles / small RVs. Designed by nationally known architect Peter LaBau and built by local boutique home construction company Worth Inc., this home maximizes its Blue Ridge mountain views. The design of the home 'brings the outside inside' with its many windows to the mountain and surrounding forest views. The open floor plan and area-specific historical references in the architecture offer both ease-of-living and uniqueness. The home is structured in three functional sections, each playfully highlighted by a different exterior siding color. Two sections are on a sing

Supplements: main floor – the master suite and laundry / mudroom, and the great room / entry. The multi-story section to the west includes the finished daylight basement, garage (on the main level) and secondary bedrooms on the 2nd floor. This design creates a natural, comfortable flow to the living space while being sensitive to placing critical spaces on a single level to accommodate late in life needs. The exterior house materials were selected for interest, durability and energy efficiency. The siding is a newer product from Harvest Timber called Windswept Lumber. This remarkable material is made from trees downed by bark beetles in the Pacific Northwest and it requires no maintenance. More than this, the carpenter bees in this area that so love cedar and other wood sidings do not like this material. The base of the home is a creative mixture of Dutch Quality Stone topped by copper flashing. Two styles and three colors were carefully blended to resemble the stone base of old barns and bridges in southern Virginia. The metal clad windows and French doors are the energy efficient Eagle E-series from Andersen. They are dual pane and include UV protection on the south side of the house. The garage doors are a new composite material that is lighter than vinyl (creating less strain on mechanical parts) but extremely durable. The interior design plays very functional elements off more sophisticated ones. Where possible, reclaimed or recycled pieces were used to give the house a more grounded feeling. All interior colorswere sampled from the home's surroundings in gentle tones of green, tan and brown. The master suite and laundry / mudroom make up the eastern most section of the house. This space is backed by an open porch with a shed roof that keeps the space cool in summer months. The master suite has unique reclaimed barn wood floors. It is sited to allow you to wake up to incredible morning sunrises to the east and mountain views south. The master bath has a dual sink area with shower and tub. It is finished in two varieties of stone tile in warm gold and cream tones under laid with radiant floor heating. Counters, as in the rest of the house, are custom concrete. This space boasts wonderful storage in both the sink areas and a separate full storage closet. The large laundry / mudroom, naturally lite by Solatubes, has a utility sink, expansive storage and counter space. The heart of the house is the center section made up by the Great Room (living room, dining room, kitchen and pantry), entry / guest bath and screen porch. The high pitched ceiling of the Great Room gives the space incredible volume while a wall of windows on the south side open it to sweeping southern views. This space also has the warm reclaimed barn wood floors, a floor-to-ceiling gas fireplace and custom cabinetry throughout. The chef's kitchen has abundant storage, rugged and unique custom concrete counters with brass and mahogany accents. During the day, this space wonderfully lite by windows and a fixed skylight. Its work efficient U shape includes a mahogany topped central island with roll out storage bins, shelves for cookbooks and a large cutting surface near the concrete farmhouse sink / integrated drainboard. The kitchen faucet finish in a rustic copper, is meant to age naturally. The sink basin is sanded to the stones, giving the impression of washing in a creek. The top cabinetry in the kitchen has interior lights and open grill work doors in a hatched pattern that is echoed in the fruit / vegetable cabinets, basement stair railing and the floor registers. The kitchen appliances are · Built-in SubZero refrigerator · JennAir electric wall oven set (top microwave, bottom oven) · JennAir gas cook top · KitchenAid pop up ventilation · JennAir dishwasher · JennAir trash compactor The pantry, also naturally lite by a Solatube, provides even more storage as well as countertop space for less used / larger appliances. The dining area backs into dual French doors that open to breezes in summer and is flanked by mahogany topped cabinetry that is perfect for storage and entertaining. The large screen porch boasts a wood fireplace, spa and custom space for a BBQ with piped in propane. The western-most section of the home has the two second floor bedrooms and a full bath. Presently, one bedroom is used as a guest room and the second, larger space as an office / craft room. A door from the guest room opens into a large unfinished space that is phenomenal for storage. The office / craft room has large custom wall cabinets for storage and a built-in mahogany topped desk with computer / accessory storage and bookshelves. The daylight basement is also in this section. It includes a music room, office / storage space, half bath and house's utility room. The music room is set up like a club with custom concrete floors, a stage / lighting and the ceiling painted black. The walls have a chair rail made of license plates. The half bath ties to the music theme of this space with the amplifier base to the sink and a "Jamm'in John" guitar lid on the toilet. The barn was built in 2015. Its design complements the house architecture using the same Windswept Lumber siding and includes heavy, hand forged, door hardware with an antique botanical design. A two-section chicken coop / custom hen house were added to the barn in 2016. These wrap from the back of the barn around to the east side. The entry coop section nearest the house has a solid roofing of clear plastic panels, keeping it dry during weather. The other is roofed with hardware wire. The barn provides weather protection (shade in the summer, respite from storms in the winter) for the coops while the eastern section brings in sunlight. The forested portions of the property are in 'forest use'. This reduces the tax burden (to almost nothing) while putting responsibility on the homeowner to educate themselves on how to properly manage the forest. The US Forest Service offers wonderful resources, including seminars and educational materials, on forest management. The property also includes creeks (two year around - one at the entry, one at the western most property edge) and hiking / ATV trails (these are actually old wagon roads thru the mountains that cross the property).
