Summer may be the vacation peak for Smith Mountain Lake visitors, but locals know that the autumn season is the time when Smith Mountain Lake really shines. Not only does fall add breathtaking colors to the already gorgeous natural landscape, but community events and attractions are some of the finest between September and early December. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorite fall time activities for residents and the Smith Mountain Lake visitors stopping by for a scenic, fun and relaxing SML weekend.
The 2015 Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour
One of Smith Mountain Lake’s most impressive sights is its extravagant lake homes. The Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour is an opportunity for guests to view the interiors of brilliantly built and decorated homes, most with a distinctive identifying factor that makes it truly fascinating. Proceeds support several local charities. This year’s home tour begins Friday, October 9th and continues through Sunday. The home tour is accessible by both car or boat. Smith Mountain Lake Parks
A day hosted by Mother Nature is incomparable at SML. Our local parks help Smith Mountain Lake visitors make the most of the peaceful, beautiful scenery. Plus, a day at the park is one of the most affordable ways to spend time. Our community offers three fantastic parks with endless outdoor activities and opportunities for educational experiences kids and adults will love.
The SML State Park in Bedford County covers a vast amount of acreage and offers biking, hiking, fishing and picnicking. You can even spend your entire stay there in a well maintained tent or RV campsite. Park staff are always on hand to help you make the most of your outdoor adventures.
The SML Community Park in Franklin County is smaller than its across-town counterpart but no less excellent. It has plenty of trails, a playground and picnic area and a fishing pier that is one of the best anywhere.
Booker T. Washington National Monument is a fascinating place where Smith Mountain Lake visitors and locals can learn about the historic achievements and life of Booker T. Washington in a highly interactive way. Indoor and outdoor exhibits include videos and replications of Washington’s life and the plantation where he was raised as a slave, all on the site of where the actual plantation was located. We highly recommend this attraction to anyone who’s never been before.
Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival
Wine loving Smith Mountain Lake visitors MUST plan a trip over this year’s annual wine festival. It’s a hit with locals and a popular event that grows and improves each year. Wineries from all over the state are featured, along with juried craft vendors and food vendors. Live bands will be on site for entertainment. You can’t beat this incredible weekend event, hosted at the perfect time of year – this year on September 26 and 27. SML Fall Chili and Craft Festival
A long-time local event, the fall chili and craft festival is the best way to celebrate the end of fall and welcome winter favorites of warm chili and eclectic craft gifts. It’s festive, competitive and may be a great way to start your holiday shopping, or find exactly what you need for this year’s Thanksgiving table. Smith Mountain Lake visitors who love to make the most out of the harvest season won’t want to miss this fall favorite, which lands on November 7th this year.
