Smith Mountain Lake Boating Regulation Changes
Boat drivers beware that new boating safety regulations will be enacted on July 1, 2013. As of that date, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries will expect motorboat operators age 40 and younger to have taken a boating safety course prior to driving. This is one phase in a series of phases to increase compliance requirements on boat and PWC drivers.
In 2007 the Virginia General Assembly enacted a law to establish a new series of boating regulations. By 2016 all PWC and motorboat operators – regardless of age – will have to complete boating safety training and carry a completion card while operating a PWC or motorboat on any Virginia lake. See the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries website for a detailed description of law changes, driver expectations and boating course locations. Have a safe summer on Smith Mountain Lake!
